'Meditation' is the theme in this second volume of Longchenpa's Trilogy of Finding Comfort and Ease. But this is no 'ordinary' or 'popular' meditation. The practice of Dzogchen meditation presented here is considered the pinnacle of all Buddhist meditative traditions -- "the king of all instructions." According to Longchenpa, the 'all-knowing' lama of the 14th century, the aim of meditation is to become free of the restrictive operations of the mind and to encounter directly the unparalleled radiance of 'pure awareness'. The experience of this meditation is thus like the sun emerging from the clouds within the understanding of the meditator. In three richly poetic chapters, Longchenpa first describes the various 'environments' which are most suitable to attaining inner calm and a wide perspective. Next, he outlines the qualities most useful to the 'individual' who desires to discover the true meaning of life. And finally, distilling the essence of the instruction, Longchenpa intimately envisions the 'way' to experience that 'pure awareness' which reveals itself in each one of us after the agitation of words and concepts have passed away... so that "an experience as open as the sky is born naturally." Once again, HERBERT V. GUENTHER, who is head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, has translated the root verses with great care and sensitivity. Throughout his introductions and notes, he draws extensively from Longchenpa's own exhaustive commentary, which describes the activation and movement of very fine, subtle energies within the human organism. In addition, Dr. Guenther, in his own precise and incomparable manner, has generously supplied both reader and scholar with many annotated and contextual interpretations of key Tibetan terms.
