In 1853-1855, on Jersey island, the author of Les Mis?rables participated in numerous "table-tapping" s?ances. At least 115 'spirits' manifested, including the illustrious dead, spirit guides, souls of fabled animals (e.g. "The Lion of Androcles") and aliens from Mercury and Jupiter. The first translation ever into English of the most important of these transcripts, Conversations with Eternity includes extensive commentary and an introduction by Martin Ebon putting Hugo's 19-year political exile in historical context.
