It wasn't until the occult revival of the second half of the 19th century that Kabbalah surfaced in English texts. William Greene, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, understood its significance for Freemasonry, but also its application to radical thought. He prefaced his study, first published in 1872, with a stirring account of the significant Masonic symbol of the Blazing Star - also a symbol of liberty of conscience and political freedom. Greene (1818-1878) was a soldier, Unitarian minister, banking reformer, anarchist, and Freemason.
