"For thirty years, Wisconsin native Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) traveled throughout the West--from the Rio Grande to Alaska--documenting the folkways of Native Americans. Beginning in 1896, he took more than 40,000 photographs of people from many of the North American tribes. This calendar's photographs are from first generation photoprints that Curtis deposited for copyright with the Library of Congress. Contextual notes on tribes and individuals, based on Curtis' research and on modern scholarship, accompany each image. Important dates and events in Native American history are noted throughout the calendar."
