The Heart of Listening, a welcome book to those of us teaching in this
field that is so difficult to put into words, embodies the uniqueness
of its author, who offers a rare combination of being a highly skilled
healing practitioner and biomedical theoretician along with
manifesting a profound spiritual vision. As a close friend put it, `Hugh
approached me slowly, not putting his hands on me until I was fully
ready to receive him, and then only with deep reverence.` This book
brings into light the marginalized genius of a small subculture of
osteopaths whose lineage dates back to William Sutherland, who, like
Hugh, was both a technical genius and a spiritual visionary. Here we
have a combination of careful anatomical analysis and instructions on
how to do skillful hands-on manipulations, always in the context of
knowing that we are engaged in a work of the spirit.

The Heart of Listening is an impeccable work that demonstrates
the healing and teaching power found in the human physical
structure. Milne provides profound psycho-spiritual insights and
makes a significant contribution to physicians, health professionals,
and individuals who seek ways to understand the unlimited
resource of healing found within the human body.

A wonder of a book. So many wisdoms and books within books.
A book for all people.
Betty Balcombe, Visionary Healer,
Author of As I See It and The Energy Connection
Originally published as a single volume, The Heart of Listening has
been re-issued as two separate volumes because of public demand for
a more concise, portable edition. Milne, a third-generation Scottish
osteopath, begins by explaining the visionary approach to healing, and
how it may be applied to the realm of craniosacral work. He explains the
importance of meditation, centering, and the cultivation of heartfulness
in the development of compassionate practice.
Knowledge of human evolution and the history of healing can open up
the healer`s understanding of his or her own capabilities. Milne
introduces the reader to the story of visionary work -- its genesis, evolution,
philosophy, and practice -- and explains how a grounding in meditation,
sensitive touch, and intuitive perception can lead to a remarkable unfoldment
in skill development. The shamanistic roots that craniosacral work
shares with all forms of healing touch, whether massage therapy, deep
tissue work, energy work, or the laying on of hands are also explored, as
is the healer`s contract, the development of perception and intuition,
and visionary diagnosis.
The second volume of The Heart of Listening details the anatomy,
physiology, energetics, and techniques that are the essential core of
visionary craniosacral work.
