This third volume of the Trilogy of Finding Comfort and Ease deals with "the paradox of there being nothing and yet there is a presence." In this classical Tibetan work of the 14th century, permeated by the warmth of felt knowledge and the rich imagery that can derive only from a most intimate and immediate experience, Longchenpa addresses the central question of the meaning and scope of Being. Viewing our usual human experience as a narrowing down of the horizon of Being, he encourages us to open and expand our perspective and to overcome the monotony of ordinary restricted visions. Longchenpa interweaves the teachings of both Buddhist Sutra and Tantra in order to explicate the meaning, chapter by chapter, of each of the eight aspects or facets of Being stated by the great philosopher Nagarjuna. Through his poetic inspiration, Longchenpa gently but firmly urges us to alter our tendency to view our world and our experience as 'real' and concrete existents. From this higher vision of non-dividedness, we behold with awe and wonderment all that is as but a dream, an enchantment, a mirage, a reflection, an echo, a phantom. And through this wider perspective we are led to directly experience the meaningfulness of Being. HERBERT V. GUENTHER is Head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. Eminently versed in the major Buddhist languages, philosophies, and traditions, he has contributed much to the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. Among his many other books and translations are Parts One and Two of Kindly Bent to Ease Us, Mind in Buddhist Psychology, and Tibetan Buddhism in Western Perspective.
