You will enjoy his candid statements about writers of his day and the 'orthodox mental strut' of the scientists. The unsympathetic attitude toward astrology has not been entirely erased, but certainly great forward strides have been made since the author wrote. We wonder about his statement that 'astrology is a curious and seductive rather than a useful study.' Would he change that statement were he writing at the present time? We think so. He would be pleasantly surprised to find that astrology is being widely used for 'useful' purposes in many fields and offered in college courses of study.After more than 60 years, Dalton's Table of Houses are considered to be among the very best and are widely used by professional astrologers as well as being basic requirement in many astrological classes. Yes, Mr. Dalton was correct in his belief that his Tables were so accurate that they would be as useful for a hundred and more years as when first published in 1893. (In more than 40 years, we have had only one error called to our attention -- and that being one degree short for Aquarius 8d, Latitude 35d!)Mr. Dalton's hopes for an 'invigorating infusion of modern thought' and students of "the right kind"who would bring "intellectual respectability"to the aims and methods of astrology have been realized. It was for such of you that he undertook the laborious task (in the days without computers) of compiling these Tables, which required more than a thousand operations in trigonometry by seven or ten logarithms each, so as to 'diminish errors' for the work of future astrologers.In the words of the author -- 'Tarry not in the dim region of fallible conjecture, but proceed to mathematic certainties.'Mr. Dalton stated in his Explanations and Instructions that his original compilations covered from 10d to 60d, but limited the published Tables to 22d to 56d because they would serve for the 'whole civilized globe.' Little did he realize how our world would expand!
